BackSpiceMaster -- Basic Steps -- Bevel/Ripple

Placing a bevel or ripple along a spice effect's edge are further ways (besides Shadow/Glow) to add depth to SpiceMaster effects. Such depth effects can:
• create the illusion of one image growing, flowing or eroding above another;
• simulate thickness in an image (a powerful way to add depth);
• emphasize the dynamic edge of a spice effect;
• create fresh PIP (picture-in-picture) looks.

How to Add a Bevel

To apply a bevel to a spice effect,

To increase or decrease the bevel width, adjust the Displace slider. To increase or decrease the bevel highlights and shadows, adjust the Light slider. To change the light angle, adjust the Angle slider. To increase or decrease the bevel softness, adjust the Softness slider. Note you can further modify the softness by using the MAIN Softness sliders in SpiceMaster, especially All Edges softness.

How to Add a Ripple

To add a ripple to a SpiceMaster effect,
follow the steps described above to apply a bevel edge. Then adjust the Waves slider as desired. Note that ripple(s) will appear relatively tightly clustered around the spice edge unless you also increase the MAIN Softness sliders in SpiceMaster.

Several ripple presets are available by clicking the FX folder icon at the right edge of the Bevel/Ripple section.

How to Vary Bevel/Ripple During the Effect

For further creative flexibility, you can smoothly vary Bevel/Ripple over time, such as to gradually decrease ripple strength toward the end of an effect (like a real water drop). To vary Bevel/Ripple settings over time, first click on the stopwatch icon next to the Bevel/Ripple slider you want to vary.

The keyframe graph for the above control will appear. Click on the keyframe line -- or click the gray Add Key (+) button at the top right of the graph -- to add a new keyframe, then drag it where desired in the graph (higher is a higher value).

To add more keyframes,
repeat as desired.

Tips

• To access useful presets, click the FX folder icon at the right edge of the Bevel/Ripple section. For example, a water drop effect (as a transition or to animate another effect) is a popular ripple effect that can be done with a simple SoftFX\Irises\Elliptic C spice and the Ripple4a preset.

Note that all Bevel/Ripple presets also affect MAIN Softness settings. Two Clear presets are available -- one of which also clears the MAIN Softness settings.

• While the SpiceMaster preview plays, you can adjust Bevel/Ripple settings interactively.
